About Bangor University

Bangor University is a public university in Bangor, Wales. It was founded in 1884 as a direct result of a public campaign against Wales’ lack of higher education institutions. It was largely funded by the local community who voluntarily contributed their wages to its development.

However, it received its Royal Charter in 1885 and was one of the founding institutions of the federal University of Wales. Officially known as University College of North Wales (UCNW), and later the University of Wales, Bangor (UWB; Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor), in 2007 it became Bangor University, independent from the University of Wales.

Currently, Bangor is host to around 12,000 students from 85 different countries and 650 teaching staff. Bangor offers more than 300 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate programs across five colleges. The university is situated on the coast of North Wales, about 450km northwest of London. Manchester International Airport is around two hours away by train.

Bangor is regarded to be amongst the UK’s best university locations, situated between the mountains of Snowdonia and the Irish Sea and offering some of the finest beaches and most beautiful scenery in the country. Bangor’s location on the coast means that it is well known for Ocean Science. Moreover, North Wales is an area of outstanding natural beauty, yet close to major cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, so traveling to and from Bangor is easy, with London also easily accessible by direct train.

However, it has also built up a strong reputation for Accounting & Finance, Sport Science, and Electronic Engineering as well. The latest National Student Survey ranks Bangor University in the UK’s top 15 for student satisfaction and the best in Wales.
